Douglas MacArthur
(1880 - 1964), American general. He was commander of the US Far East forces in 1941. In 1942 he made the famous pledge 'I shall return', when the Japanese forced him to withdraw from the Philippines. He was appointed supreme Allied commander in the southwest Pacific in 1942 and gradually rolled back the Japanese forces, accepting their surrender in 1945.
